What an absolutely lovely tribute to your children - it sounds as though your life is infinitely more interesting, and infinitely more difficult.

Indeed.
You touched on a point that is dear to me- your children are babies for a very, very short amount of time. But they are part of your family forever. The idea of having a second one is difficult to grasp when you are still knee deep in trying to figure out the first one. But knowing that one day, you will have a 25 year old daughter and a 28 year old son at your dinner table talking to you passionately about art or politics or whether or not to move to Europe is where the real excitement is. At least for me. I love every day of a 5 and 7 year old and their conversations and revelations. I enjoy it, truly. But I so look forward to the rest of it, all that I cannot yet imagine, at the same time. Peace to you and Jordana and Barnaby as your life changes forever. In no time, you won't even remember what it was to live without her.

Sean, I think you have summed up exactly how I felt the first three years of my becoming a parent. In fact, I would be willing to say, most parents feel this exact same way. You just wrote it more eloquently than 99% of us could.
I have learned that I am only accompanying my children for a few short years on their own journey. Our goal is to guide the journey to productivity and happiness, but the true guide of the journey is alway the human, child or adult. For now, We (you and most parents) treasure the beauty of becoming a parent and delight in these small souls that bear our likeness.

It's worth it to take a few moments to read Danah Boyd's recent post on this,
http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/archives/2010/05/23/quitting-facebook-is-pointless-challenging-them-to-do-better-is-not.html

I won't reiterate her points, but suffice to say that I agree with her pretty much across the board. I recognize the myriad of Facebook fails over the past two years - my response has been to spread the word, respond when I can, and try to help my friends, family, and students with how to protect themselves and use the service responsibly. Facebook isn't a benevolent public service organization - they're trying to find ways to monetize their services. They're a company, like any other. And as consumers, it's critical that we find ways to have voices in the eventual (I believe) regulation of the service. (It's important to remember that the drive for personalization and customization is a big part of the Facebook mess, too.)

I don't think that Facebook is making us lazy. We've always been lazy. Who actually wants to do sales and marketing? Facebook has just become a way for us to activate our friend networks in a more comprehensive way, and that tends to make us feel like we're doing more sales and marketing than we actually are. That's our fault, not Facebook's (or any other social media channel).

Facebook is simply one invaluable marketing channel for artists, organizations, and companies. People using it need to apply common sense and ethical principles that have guided effective word-of-mouth marketing since long before Facebook. The difference is that we need to apply those principles more vigorously, given that the channels we have to broadcast are now so swift (immediate) and have more reach (often, intrusive reach).

Like it or not, Facebook is innovating the social web. I often don't like it, in fact. But I'm invested enough in the service and what it offers me - and I'm invested in the evolution of the social web - that I am happy to stay on board, and committed to improving the service, holding the company accountable, and helping others understand privacy issues.
